8 things job seekers want in 2023

By Fay Capstick

2023 is here and many people are thinking about changing their job or looking for their next contract. Job seekers with in-demand IT skills are continuing to be able to call the shots with employers. But what are job seekers wanting in general from the roles that they are applying for? This week we look at the eight top things that job seekers want in 2023.

Career path

For candidates looking for permanent employment one of the things they would like to know upfront is what path for career progression is open to them? What opportunities are there to grow and further their skills? They want to know that they won’t stagnate in a role.

More money

Job seekers are particularly motivated by money at the moment due to the rising inflation and the cost of living crisis. So there is an increased sensitivity from job seekers around renumeration rates. One thing that would help is for the pay rates to be transparent, so applicants can decide whether to proceed with applications.

Bonuses can also be a perk for some, but higher wages are far more likely to influence a candidate’s decision in the current economy.

Diversity

Candidates will hope to see a diverse workforce at their potential employers. This shows them that the company is more likely to be forward thinking and progressive, and will therefore likely be a better and more agile place to work.

Hybrid or fully remote working

One of the biggest trends to come out of Covid is working from home, either fully or in hybrid form. This trend shows no signs of decreasing and we expect candidates to want this to be offered by potential employers.

Appreciation

Everyone wants to feel that their work is appreciated and recognised and this is something employers can easily manage. Job seekers, particularly for permanent positions, will be checking the reputation of your business and reading reviews from former and current employees online, and this can make or break a candidates decision to apply or take a job application further.

Work/Life balance

With the problem of stress and burnout ever growing, providing a work/life balance is important to candidates. This shows that an employer is keen to keep their staff happy and healthy and performing at their best.

Transparency

Candidates will want to know what is involved in a role. This includes how much time has to be spent in the office, what a typical day might involve and whether any travel is expected.

Speed

As recruiters we know that the process of filling a role can stall for many reason, many of which are beyond our control. This is extremely frustrating for a keen candidate waiting for news. Candidates would really appreciate if hiring decisions could be made as quickly as possible, where possible.
