What did we learn from CES: Part One

By Fay Capstick

It’s that time of year again when all eyes in the tech industry turn to Las Vegas and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This is when we learn about all the fun gadgets and gizmos and work tech that will soon be coming to market. One of the most exciting things was that CES was finally a real world event again after the pandemic forced it to go virtual. Over 100,000 attended with 2,200 companies displaying their wares. In this week’s blog we will be looking at what we have learned from the 2023 show.

Huge LG OLED TV

First up is the huge OLED TV shown off by LG. It is a whopping 97-inches. Not only is it super big but it also receives all of its content wirelessly, freeing your entertainment space up from all those boxes and wires. All of your peripherals will connect to a hub that will be provided and content will be transmitted in 4K. This hub can be up to 30 feet away, making for a minimalist look around your TV. This is expected to be on sale this year.

Acer eKinekt desk

After the Peloton craze during Covid many people were keen to ditch the gyms for working out at home. Acer have now developed a desk where you can workout while you work, should you be so inclined.

The eKinekt is essentially an exercise bike with a desk attached, in a similar vein to the treadmills that we have seen attached to desks. The added extra here is that your pedalling can help generate power to charge your laptop and smartphone. The downside is the expected price tag of $999, so it might be better to start by buying one of the mini pedalling devices and pop it under your current desk to see how you feel about doing Zoom calls while sweaty.

Back to the future with JBL

Hopping on the trend for all things retro, JBL showed off some items that many of us never thought we’d see again. They are offering hi-fi separates including a CD player, integrated amplifier and a turn table. Featuring a retro design and wood veneer they will look the part while delivering high quality sound.

Withings U-Scan

The trend for wellbeing and monitoring our health shows no signs of slowing down. Withings, known for their body fat scales, showed off a device called the U-Scan. This is a little gizmo that will live in your toilet bowl. This hardly sounds appealing, but it will perform a useful task for anyone that likes full information about their current health status.

The U-Scan is loaded with three months of test pods. It will gather data from urine (yes, it can tell the difference between users) and send results to an app. Scans that it will perform include vitamin C levels and carb balance. It will also track menstrual cycles. It is not yet known whether it will inform you if you are pregnant.

It doesn’t look like it is going to be cheap, with the device expected to cost $530 plus replacement cartridges, so it might be best to stick with the cheap pot of test sticks from amazon for the moment. And as always, head to the doctor if you feel that something is wrong with your health.

Part two will be available next week, including colour changing cars and folding phones.
