What does it take to work in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning?

By Fay Capstick

One of our top predictions of IT skills required for 2022 was working in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. This week we will be looking in more detail at what it takes to work in this fast growing IT field.

What is Artificial intelligence and machine learning?

Artificial Intelligence refers to getting a machine, a computer, to simulate or mimic human behaviours. This can range from the very basic to the extremely complex. Artificial Intelligence (AI) means that tasks can be completed far quicker than a human could do them.

Machine learning is sub-field of AI which has the machine learn from past results and data. It therefore knows what to do without being told.

AI and machine learning is a vast field, and examples include working with Alexa and Siri, robotic vacuums, self driving cars and personalised recommendations systems (such as used by Netflix).

You would be able to work in most industries if you pursued a career in AI and machine learning. Example industries include technology, media, marketing, national security, gaming, retail and healthcare.

Alan Turing (1912-1954), a British polymath, was a pioneer in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The Turing Test that he created bears his name, though it was originally called the Imitation Game. This is a test of a machine’s ability to imitate a human (in text form) and thus fool a human into thinking it is indeed human. No machine has yet passed the Turing Test.

A future potential goal is truly intelligent machines, ones which could surpass human intelligence. An example would be Data from Star Trek.

What types of jobs are there in this field?

The field of AI and machine learning has opened up many jobs, and this area is rapidly growing and exciting. Below are some examples:

  • Data analytics: You will be finding patterns in past data in order to predict future patterns.
  • AI engineer: You will build AI models from scratch.
  • Big Data Engineer: You will creating systems that let business communicate and collate user data.
  • Data scientist: You will collect and interpret data.
  • Software engineer: You will develop the programming for AI tools.

What formal skills will I need to work in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning?

You will need a good understanding of calculus and linear algebra. The more mathematical skills you have the better. You will also need to be familiar with a programming language such as Python, Java or C/C++. Python will help you to understand and then create the complex algorithms that AI work will require.

Ideally you will hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in mathematics and/or computer science. Higher degrees exist specifically in AI, which would help you stand out and gain an in-depth knowledge. It will also help you should you be aiming for higher level jobs.

A good strategy is to thoroughly research your intended job area within the field. You will be able to see what qualifications and skills are required. If possible, also talk to professionals already working and find out the route they took into the industry.

What other skills will I need?

Excellent communicator: You will need to be able to communicate flawlessly with others. The ability to collaborate and work with others, understanding their needs, is essential.

Technical knowledge: AI and machine learning is a very technical and intricate subject. The more technical knowledge you have the better.

Analytical skills: You will need analytical and critical thinking skills to enable you to work through the problems that your job will bring.

Active learning: This is a fast moving and growing field. You will need to actively learn and keep up to date with advances. A curious mindset is very important.
