Key responsibilities:

  • Leading on all aspects of research (planning, moderation, analysis, reporting) for both generative (participatory design) and evaluative (usability testing) research. Communicate user research findings to help the team and wider organisation develop a deep understanding of users and their needs - including presentations at show and tells, designing and maintaining research outputs and creating formal reports.
  • Planning, designing, and conducting the usability testing process from developing user recruitment through to test moderation, analysis and reporting.
  • Conducting research to gather insights for new product, system and concept developments (including user requirements gathering and early-stage concept and prototype testing and other approaches to ensuring the user need is fully understood).
  • Modelling insights gained from user research into formats to enhance organisational understanding of our users - such as personas and user journey maps.
  • Working closely with designers and developers to turn user data into actionable product or service requirements that feed into prototype development, and influence product direction.
  • Presenting findings and related design/business recommendations and customer in sights to senior decision makers. Building strong relationships with testing partners to ensure they are advocates for the product at launch.
  • Working as part of cross-functional teams with product managers, designers and developers to turn user research findings into stories and actions that lead to valuable product and service features

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Experience and understanding of a range of user centred service design and delivery practices.
  • Ability to understand what problem your team is trying to solve, and align user research activities to inform decision making and action.
  • Experience and understanding of a range of user research methods, when to use those methods and how to apply them correctly.
  • Experience and understanding of a range of techniques for analysis of research data, synthesis of findings, and presentation of clear findings that colleagues can understand and use.
  • A good understanding of the diversity of users of government services, and the ability to include many kinds of users in appropriate research activities.
  • Experience of working with colleagues to plan and do continuous user research in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of involving your team in research activities, and in analysis and synthesis.
  • A good understanding of the social and technological context for government services, and the ability to align user research activities to help their team understand changing user behaviour.
  • Understanding of the quantitative analysis and synthesis elements of user research.
  • Some knowledge of current technologies used to build and operate digital services, and the different technical roles in a digital team.

Deliverables:

  • Planning, running and facilitating user research workshops.
  • Analysing outcomes of user research to propose product improvements to delivery teams and product management.
  • Working with performance analysts to combine quantitative and qualitative aspects of user understanding to present a combined view on user needs.
  • Working with designers to iterate products and services based on user needs.
  • Team player who will contribute to ways of working of the team.

Hybrid working

Travel to FCDO premises in London twice a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) – possible

occasional travel to FCDO office in Milton Keynes

Travel to any supplier sites for meetings/discussions.
