As a Lead Engineer:

The Strategic Planning & Stress Testing (SP&ST) Transformation Programme in conjunction with Finance on the Cloud (FotC) will deliver a fully aligned and integrated SP&ST function which is embedded into core Prudential and Business Management initiatives

The initiative is to establish a new end-to-end SP&ST production capability leveraging Cloud technology, delivering stream-lined processes, centralised production, a new data platform, globally standardised calculation engines, and significantly enhancing analytical capability to drive strategic decision making as part of the SP&ST Business Driver Based Models project

The SP&ST Business Driver Based Models project will deliver a fully aligned and integrated forecasting capability as part of the target state operating model for Finance. The initiative will develop new python-based models to forecast a range of business Balance Sheet and P&L line items

Global IT & Finance will play a key role in this significant Change programme. This will be achieved by delivering the following outcomes:

  • Optimised process, controls and organisation design. Alignment of organisational structure to simplify execution, reducing inefficiencies and increasing accountability to focus on managing outcomes and usages
  • Cloud enabled forecasting capabilities with maximum automation, agility and ability to provide insightful analytics to drive decision making
  • Increased capacity and culture to execute more frequent forecasting exercise to test the business at various levels and focus on understanding and implication

Impact on Business

  • Responsible for delivery activities to achieve the objectives/ requirements set out in the SP&ST Business Driver Based Models project / FotC Wave 1b
  • Documentation of Epics and User Stories in context with the model development in an Agile context
  • Be a trusted SP&ST point of contact across HOST & Finance Change Delivery Programmes of work to support the HSBC Finance Cloud Framework
  • Contribute detailed SME knowledge in areas across HOST & Finance Change Delivery
  • Support testing and overall delivery of the HSBC Finance Cloud Framework solutions
  • Ensure that the delivered solution follows robust, industrialised procedures and meets the required audit and control requirements
  • Apply Agile and DevOps concepts to ways of working, where appropriate, including participating in and running scrum teams
  • Manage detailed definition of system requirements, with traceability through design, development, configuration and testing approach
  • Apply an understanding of Business, HOST and Finance priorities, drivers and challenges to lead design of strategically aligned solutions, considering aspects of Risk/ Reward

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Influence and collaborate with stakeholders, to build consensus and shape change outcomes
  • Participate / establish and lead working groups to enable the delivery of objectives/ requirements set out in FotC Wave 1b / SP&ST Transformation Programme
  • Build and manage key relationships with internal and external senior stakeholders
  • Understand stakeholders' objectives, direction, priorities and challenges, managing and addressing concerns and objections
  • Foster open communication which anticipates stakeholder expectations
  • Champion and embed outstanding service and customer advocacy
  • Partner with Finance, HOST and Business teams to ensure initial business requirements are understood and to sustain collaboration around any required changes and implementation planning
  • Work across other key stakeholders including HOST, Risk, Finance, Business and GFOC functions at Group and Regional Level, and Global Finance Change

Leadership & Teamwork from supplier

  • Responsible for delivering FotC Wave 1b / SP&ST Transformation working with multiple teams and geographies, therefore the role holder must be highly skilled in teamwork, to drive his/her own and the team’s approach and standards

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Compliance with all relevant Bank and HSBC Finance Cloud Framework design, development and testing standards to quality capabilities are developed that promote operational stability and control
  • Ensure due observance of HSBC Internal Control Standards and Group Compliance Policy as part of the design and implementation
  • Facilitate requirements management processes and design detailed solutions based on requirements; challenge business intent in a constructive manner
  • Support/ manage all regulatory and compliance matters and operational risk
  • Support/ manage and monitor compliance with all relevant mandatory standards, group policies and tools such as Business Transformation Framework, ISR and data policy, as well as maintaining a focus on internal controls such as Operational Risk and SOX
  • Apply an understanding of good governance and implement effective approvals process
  • Define requirements management processes and design detailed business solutions based on requirements; challenge business intent in a constructive manner

Major Challenges

  • SME Knowledge - Excellent understanding of HSBC Finance Cloud Framework
  • Prioritisation Decisions - Balancing strategic HSBC Finance Cloud Framework delivery objectives with large amount of new, volatile regulatory requirements in a cost-constrained environment. Managing potentially conflicting agendas, priorities and timelines across functions (inside and outside Finance) as well as across geographic and regulatory jurisdictions
  • Industry knowledge - The role holder must demonstrate robust business knowledge and stay abreast of developments in the industry, the functional area and other relevant areas such as technology, data and methodology
  • Stakeholder complexity – The role holder must manage multiple stakeholders across organisation boundaries to ensure project plans are developed and executed, requirements are gathered and designs agreed, dealing with different interests and resolving conflicts. Poor requirements and design decisions must also be challenged

Role Context

  • The role has been created to support HSBC Finance Cloud Framework delivery initiatives and to ensure Finance Change Delivery is globally consistent, coherent and effective
  • The role holder works as part of a team of people and has high level of flexibility to consult with Senior Management (especially within Finance and HOST) at Group and Regional level. The role holder will need to have the ability to work alongside and gain the support of management and staff at all levels and across Group, Regional and specialist teams across the Group
  • The role holder will colloborate with, influence, motivate and guide stakeholders and manage project team members
  • The role holder will work effectively across multiple initiatives simultaneously

Role Dimensions

  • The role holder will work with a large Global IT & Finance team that delivers complex transformational and important regulatory change
  • The role will require co-ordination of teams/ activities across multiple global regions

Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements)

  • The job holder will also continually reassess the Operational Risks associated with the role and inherent in the Business, taking account of changing legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology
  • This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take into account the likelihood of operational risk events, and by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department
  • The role will support the implemention of the Operational Risk control framework and per the BRCMs – “Three Lines of Defence”

Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)

  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points, together with any issues raised by external regulators
  • Observe and promote the use of the Group’s preferred programme management methods/tools.
  • The job holder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply
  • This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications (For the role – not the role holder)

  • Significant experience in the delivery of Change within the Finance/ Technology business domain, including in-depth knowledge of the existing processes and solutions in place for modelling across multiple Risk types and expertise in Cloud technology solutions
  • Recognised analysis, design, development and testing capabilities. Skilled in modelling and analysis
  • Strong documentation skills, promoting concise and clear written deliverables
  • Exceptional drive, motivation and commitment and focus in operational excellence
  • Outstanding understanding of HSBC Group structures, values, behaviours, processes and objectives
  • Relevant knowledge of the Group’s Finance function in multiple locations and systems used by Finance and Risk
  • Detailed understanding of the HOST & Finance operating model at Group, business and country levels
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment with proven ability to handle multiple outputs at the same time
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with proven experience of communicating effectively and confidently at all levels across the Group in a complex global environment
  • Outstanding relationship management, collaboration and influencing skills
