Network Engineer - Firewall Specialist

2 years of firewall experience - be ale to do diagnosis, numbers of sites efficiency type of project, part of a wider network team - operations work - looking for someone who is not a trouble shooter - looking or a team player.

The HCS team design, build and run all DWP hosting infrastructure including Public Cloud and On-Premises hosting, and help product and service owners to transition to the Cloud.

The vision for HCS is to support the wider DWP vision of ‘Digital by Default’ by:

1. Providing an end-to-end ‘multi-cloud’ hosted service for DWP’s Product Development Units.

The successful individual will be working as a technical resource in a small project team concentrating on firewall policy administration and other appropriate firewall duties. The candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge of administrating medium to large firewalls; it would be preferable if they also had FortiGate experience. The individual will need to be able demonstrate the ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately, with significant attention to detail, for long periods, possibly by using scripting.

The individual will report to the STFC Network Technical Architect and will be accountable to the Project Manager and senior Firewall Engineer for this programme of work. They will be expected to contribute in regular meetings with the STFC network team, all STFC departments and with an external network security consultancy. They will work autonomously to implement changes, which have been signed off by the project.

In order to free up permanent staff to work on the project there may be a requirement for them to take on business as usual activities. For any BAU duties they would report directly to the Sustaining Delivery Manager.

Working within a change-controlled environment the individual is expected to create secure firewalls policies and strengthen the security of the onsite firewall running within our organisation.

They will be expected to communicate with people across our organisation with differing levels of technical knowledge. They will be accountable for all of the communication with system administrators affected by the changes that are being made to the policies.

The individual will be expected to produce high quality documentation of the changes being made.

Personal Skills and Attributes

Soft Skills: excellent documentation writing, good people skills, self-motivated, experience of working on large successful network projects, able to travel (if required) to one of our other sites in Daresbury, UK, ability to work from home.

Technical Skills (Essential):

• 2+ years of experience of firewall administration

• Strong trouble shooting and fault diagnosis skills

• Strong experience with firewall log analysis platforms

Technical Skills (Desirable):

• Experience of working with FortiGate firewalls

• Experience of FortiAnalyser

• Knowledge of IPv6

• Working knowledge of enterprise networking (routing/switching)
