Job description

We are currently recruiting for a web operation engineers who care about building, running and improving infrastructure systems. You will collaborate with delivery teams to provide infrastructure and operational support for new and existing digital services. We expect you to be familiar with cloud infrastructure providers, configuration management techniques, as well as working practices such as continuous integration and continuous deployment.

Responsibilities

As a WebOps Engineer, you’ll:

  • Build and configure new secure server platforms and the automated tooling to do so.
  • Maintain existing infrastructure and suggest improvements.
  • Have a good knowledge of modern web protocols and security standards.
  • You will be a continual learner, keeping up to date with modern infrastructure tools and techniques.
  • Contribute to the WebOps community of practise by sharing knowledge and skills.
  • Act as a digital ambassador by sharing experiences through blog posts and engaging with the wider development community.
  • Work independently, having a high level of discipline to manage and take ownership of technical issues.
  • Be able to analyse complex technical problems and advise appropriate solutions, given sometimes conflicting requirements.
  • Be able to focus and concentrate on solving complex problems, sometimes for prolonged periods of time.
  • Be able to communicate highly complex technical issues and risks to non-technical business stakeholders external to the team, both verbally and written.
  • Build the security of new and existing infrastructure in order to protect information from unauthorised access, disclosure, disruption, modification or destruction.
  • Be able to influence senior technical managers regarding the architecture and systems, often involving highly complex technical negotiations at team meetings and the cross-department architecture forum.
  • Be able to handle sensitive negotiations around change in scope and handling shifting priorities.
  • Sometimes helping out with the recruitment of technical staff including sifting and interviewing.

Essential criteria

Knowledge and skills

  • Administering common databases like MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, RavenDB
  • Familiarity with network protocols – TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, etc
  • An understanding of application deployment strategies, continuous integration and version control
  • Operational management of Windows servers, delivering a complex web application stack
  • Knowledge of Powershell, CLI and scripting
  • Ability to rapidly acquire new software skills and to work with new technologies

Experience

  • Demonstrable technical and analytical experience working across business functions (Development / Product Owners / User Experience).
  • Significant experience with AWS and other cloud infrastructure providers such as Azure or similar
  • Experience using configuration management tools such as Cloudformation, Puppet, Ansible, Chef etc
  • Experience debugging a complex, multi-server service in a high availability environment
  • Experience writing and documenting maintainable software within collaborative environments
  • Previous experience working in a team of WebOps engineers to deliver a first-class service

Desirable criteria

Knowledge and skills

  • Operational management of Linux servers, delivering a complex web application stack
  • Knowledge of container orchestration systems, minimalist operating systems and Docker
  • Knowledge of monitoring and logging solutions
  • Knowledge of Varnish, nginx or other reverse HTTP proxies

Experience

  • Experience with legacy systems and migrations
  • Experience of working in the Health sector / NHS
  • Experience working within an Agile development environment
  • Experience of CI/CD tools such as Octopus, Docker, Jenkins, Atlassian Bamboo and Hudson
  • Experience of Web Farm and load balanced applications
